Born in 1986 in Saarbrücken, Germany, Amela Rasi is a visual artist who currently lives and works in Munich. As the daughter of migrants from former Yugoslavia, she grew up in a bilingual environment and spent much of her life between Germany and Bosnia. This unique cultural background and experience of navigating two distinct worlds have profoundly shaped the themes and content of her artwork.

Amela's paintings are deeply inspired by human interactions and the complexities of personal relationships. In her series Identity, she explores the theme of self-discovery, not only through her own experiences of searching for her identity but also by reflecting on the stories and struggles of others. Her work portrays identity as a dynamic, ever-evolving construct, captured in the continuous flow of lines that permeate her compositions. These lines symbolize the fragmented and diverse nature of individual identity experiences, which accumulate over the course of a lifetime, yet remain embedded within a seemingly stable and overarching environment.

As the Identity series has developed over time, Amela’s focus has expanded beyond the exploration of individual identity to encompass the interconnections and intersections between multiple identities. This evolution culminated in the creation of the series The Merging of Two Identities, which delves into the transformative moments when two distinct identities meet and begin to shape and influence each other’s development. In this series, Amela explores the profound impact these encounters have on personal growth and change, highlighting the fluidity and complexity of human connection.

Visually, this shift is reflected in the transition from the flowing lines of identity to more abstract, softly permeable forms. The vibrant colors she employs are deliberately chosen to contrast and sometimes clash, symbolizing the tension and difference between two personalities sharing a moment together. At first glance, these colors may appear mismatched, but upon closer inspection, they reveal a harmonious interplay of contrasts that reflects the complex and multifaceted nature of identity formation. Amela applies these colors using acrylic paints, layering them in thin coats with various brushes to build depth and texture. Additionally, she enhances certain elements with oil pastels, adding both soft and firm accents to emphasize key areas of her compositions.
