COLT SEAGER

"I see my work as it evolves naturally—it develops through construction but comes alive through its deconstruction. My goal is to offer an invitation into the thin place through abstraction, contemplation, exploration of form, and the rhythm of making marks—allowing one mark to carry into another—and in so doing, allow for a holy space where the divine transcends closer to earth."

Colt Seager (b. 1993) is an American painter and sculptor based near Chicago, Illinois. Deeply inspired by the sacred stillness and subtle grandeur of the natural world, particularly the landscapes of the American Midwest, Seager approaches his practice as both a spiritual and physical dialogue with nature. His work is grounded in a process-based methodology that mirrors his reverence for the environment — each texture, gesture, and surface becoming a record of his meditative engagement with the earth’s rhythms.

The expressive mark-making, layered materials, and tactile surfaces that define Seager’s paintings and sculptures are not merely aesthetic choices but are the result of an immersive, intuitive response to landscape and memory. His visual language feels both ancient and immediate, evoking elemental forms and evanescent atmospheres that appear to emerge organically from his materials. This fusion of spontaneity and intentionality lends his work a quiet intensity — a balance between what is formed and what is found.

Seager’s process emphasizes the interplay between construction and deconstruction. He builds up surfaces with paint, earth pigments, raw canvas, and often reclaimed materials, only to erode or subtract from them, allowing fragility and imperfection to take center stage. In doing so, he reveals the history embedded in each piece — a sedimentation of gestures that speaks to time, erosion, memory, and the sacred act of creation itself.

“I see my work as it evolves naturally—it develops through construction but comes alive through its deconstruction,” Seager notes. “My goal is to offer an invitation into the thin place through abstraction, contemplation, exploration of form, and the rhythm of making marks—allowing one mark to carry into another—and in so doing, allow for a holy space where the divine transcends closer to earth.”

This concept of the “thin place” — a threshold where the boundary between the material and spiritual realms becomes porous — is central to his philosophy. Through abstraction and repetition, his pieces encourage a slowing down, a quieting of the mind that allows space for reflection, presence, and transcendence. Whether in two-dimensional works or sculptural forms, Seager cultivates a visual environment where the viewer is invited to pause and reconnect — with nature, with self, with something beyond.

Ultimately, Seager’s art is not only about what is seen, but what is felt. It resists spectacle in favor of subtlety, and in its restraint, becomes a powerful vessel for personal interpretation. His work offers a contemplative refuge — a place where viewers are encouraged to engage deeply, to find meaning not through explanation but through presence. In a world increasingly saturated with noise and speed, his pieces stand as quiet meditations on stillness, transformation, and the sacredness of form.

Through this body of work, Colt Seager reminds us that art can be more than an object; it can be an experience, a sacred encounter, and an invitation to dwell — however briefly — in the thin space between earth and the divine.
