JOAN SALO

"With every stroke I make, I aim to capture not only the visible, but also the unseen, the unspoken. My art is a reflection of my journey—an exploration of emotions, memories, and the quiet spaces between light and shadow. It is through these expressions that I attempt to communicate the profound and often elusive essence of the human experience, inviting others to look beyond the surface and into the heart of what truly matters."

Joan Saló (born in Igualada, 1983) is an artist currently living and working in Berlin. He graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona in 2006 and later pursued advanced studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Italy. Saló’s artistic practice is rooted in a profound exploration of perception, memory, and the intersection of materiality and space. His works delve into themes such as the ephemeral nature of time, the interplay between light and shadow, and the relationship between the viewer and the artwork. With a strong conceptual foundation, his works invite the viewer to engage in a dialogue with their own emotional and intellectual responses to the art.

Saló’s artistic journey has taken him across a wide array of international venues, where his works have been exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, earning him recognition for his unique voice in contemporary art. Among his solo exhibitions, "Umbra, Penumbra, Antumbra" at Taubert Contemporary in Berlin, Germany (2023), stands out as one of his most recent showcases, exploring the thresholds between light and dark, presence and absence. Other significant solo shows include "Hypnagogia" at Cementiri d'Igualada in Spain (2022), a meditation on the boundary between wakefulness and sleep, and "Dark Matter" at Taubert Contemporary in Berlin (2020), where he explored the unseen forces that shape our perception of the universe.

Throughout his career, Saló has engaged in intimate dialogues with the works of past masters. One of these instances was "In Ascolto", a 2018 exhibition at Maurizio Caldirola Gallery in Monza, Italy, where he presented works in direct conversation with a piece by Giorgio Morandi, highlighting Saló’s ability to intertwine his practice with the historical context of modern European art. His other notable solo exhibitions include "Hic-Stans" at N2 Gallery in Barcelona (2016), "Nunc-Stans" at Maurizio Caldirola Gallery in Monza (2015), and "Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur" at CCA Andratx in Mallorca (2014).

Saló has also participated in a wide range of collective exhibitions, reflecting his international profile and collaborative spirit. These include "Hin und Her" at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin (2023), "Long Time No See" at Taubert Contemporary in Berlin (2021), and "Le Lucky" at HVW8 Gallery in Berlin (2019). His participation in "Dark was the Night" at CCA Andratx in Mallorca (2018), "Between the Lines" at Michele Mariaud Gallery in New York (2017), and "Above and Below" at Galerie Derouillon in Paris (2015) further cement his position in the global art scene.

In 2018, Saló was selected for the prestigious CCA Andratx Residency Programme in Andratx, Mallorca, which provided him with a unique opportunity to immerse himself in the creative process and refine his practice. This experience allowed him to reflect on his artistic trajectory and explore new ways to engage with space, time, and materiality in his work.

With his work spanning various mediums, Joan Saló continues to challenge and expand the boundaries of contemporary art. His exhibitions and residencies have solidified his reputation as an artist committed to both conceptual rigor and aesthetic innovation, and he remains a prominent figure in the international art community.
